This is an independent website that allows expert users to fully explore the single fares available when using an Oyster Card or Contactless Payment Card on rail services (i.e. London Underground, London Overground, TfL Rail, National Rail and Docklands Light Railway) in the London area. It can be used to get a general idea of what you might be charged to travel on a particular route between two stations, or to make yourself aware of cheaper routes that may be available between two stations and enable you to save money, at the expense of a slower journey.
It does not include details of Travelcard fares, bus or tram fares, nor details of the pricing caps that apply when you make multiple journeys on the same day.

Oyster Pay As You Go (PAYG) is a system of payment for public transport used in London. Whilst it can also be used to pay for travel on buses, trams and certain ferries and cablecar services, this site only covers use on rail services, which are categorised by Transport for London (TfL) into the five modes shown below:

The Oyster PAYG system dispenses with the concept of purchasing a ticket in advance for a given journey. Instead, the passenger must be in possession of a card (either a dedicated Oyster Card onto which funds must be loaded in advance, or a contactless EMV payment card) and payment for the journey becomes a multi-step process:
If the passenger encounters a ticket inspector during their journey, his/her Oyster card (or contactless payment card) will be scanned. The fact that the card has been validated (i.e. touched-in) is enough to ensure it passes the inspection. Possession of a ticket is not necessary and indeed the passenger does not need to know or plan in advance where his/her destination will be. However the maximum journey time for the zones travelled through must not be exceeded.
If the steps above are followed and the maximum journey time is not exceeed, the final cost of the journey will be as displayed in the results of a fare query using the form above. For some journeys, multiple routes at different prices are possible, and the query results will indicate where the passenger should change (and possibly which pink validators need to be touched) in order to be charged one of the alternative prices. Where different prices apply at different times, the price that does apply is always determined by the time of first touching in at the origin station.
Different pricing scales also apply depending on if the journey is deemed to be wholly a TfL journey (tube), wholly a National Rail journey (national-rail), or a mixed mode (mixed-rail) journey. Details of the complexities of the pricing scales and the interactions between them is certainly beyond the scope of this brief introduction, however the Pricing Mode column in the fare query results gives an indication of the scale applying and can be helpful in understanding the fare structure.
As alluded to in the previous paragraph, for the sake of giving a brief overview of the PAYG system in just a few paragraphs, the above explanation does not cover all the possible complexities. The Oyster Rail site also includes helpful detailed explanations of daily capping (whereby the charge for multiple journeys in a single day will not go over a certain price, which varies depending on the times you travel and the zones you pass through) and interactions between Travelcards held on Oyster and PAYG fares. These and other more advanced topics are beyond the scope of this site!

This site was launched in February 2016 with the aim of being a companion site to BR Fares, for the TfL Oyster fares database used in London. It uses information from the public TfL open data API and attempts to present it in a clear manner that will be familiar to users of the existing BR Fares website.
